Hands-on activities

The students of the “Risk Assessment and Environmental Safety” master programme have the opportunity to learn through hands-on activities, thus improving their learning experience.

In the practical exercises organized with the equipment available at the Research Institute for Sustainability and Disaster Management based on High Performance Computing (ISUMADECIP) the students use their theoretical knowledge on systematic risk analysis to identify different types of risk and the possible types of intervention.

During the hands-on activities the students have the possibility to wear the chemical protection suits and they are given assignments involving identification of the dispersion source, using specific software and GPS devices. They also learn how to use specific equipment such as: thermal imaging camera for the detection of heated surfaces and search of missing persons in low visibility areas, IR thermal binoculars, metal detector, lighting balloon system, sonometer, device for the detection of people under rubble, respiratory protective equipment, water testing kit, radiation detectors, chemical detectors, inflatable tent - control post, decontamination tent, first aid kit, electric generator, portable weather station.
